Its Bright Future

Crosstown is a term coined by realtors but starting to catch on with the public as the name of the new cross area of Downtown Vancouver between Gastown and Chinatown. It is a small pocket of late developments that will be increasingly popular for mid- to long-term investment as the Downtown East Side gentrification continues. Three new developments and two not so new make up most of the area. Newest are the Taylor, the Firenze, and the Espania. The older two are International Village and The Europa, both around 10 years old.

The great thing about Crosstown is its location literally steps away from GM Place, BC Place, Costco, Tinsletown Shopping Centre/Movie Theatre, Gastown, the Skytrain Stadium Station, and the False Creek Seawall. Andy Livingstone Park covers a large central part with a tranquil water feature and an all-weather sports field.

Its Entrepreneurs

In between Downtown and historic Gastown, Crosstown quietly makes a name for itself as Vancouver’s hippest hidden gem, a mix of influences from all its neighbours with a distinct flavour of its own. Chambar owners Nico and Karri Schuermans are royalty in Crosstown. First they opened their world-class Belgian restaurant on Beatty Street between Pender and Dunsmuir. Then in 2008, they opened Café Medina, the hottest brunch spot in town. Most recently, they joined with chef David Robertson to open the Dirty Apron Cooking School and gourmet delicatessen.

But this cluster of culinary hot spots is not all that’s elevating this neighbourhood. Converted warehouses are now mid-luxury lofts, and chic home-decor stores have opened to furnish them. Robert Quinnell, co-owner of Provide, a Beatty Street home-accessories store, carries Martha Sturdy wall sculptures, formidable acid-on-steel images priced from $3,600 to $8,400.
