Point Grey 2The Point Grey neighbourhood of the Canadian City of Vancouver, British Columbia, faces English Bay to the north, abuts the University Endowment Lands at the end of the Burrard Peninsula to the west, and extends to 16th Avenue to the south and to Alma Street to the east. Most of the northern border on the ocean bay is parkland and beach shoreline with steep slopes down to the water at Locarno Beach and the Spanish Banks.

Resident population within that defined area is just under 12,000. In Point Grey, the top five ethnic cohorts, as in Metro Vancouver, are English, Scottish, Canadian, Irish, and Chinese but proportionally more English and Scottish and fewer Chinese. Languages in order of prevalence are English, Chinese, German, Greek, Japanese, and Dutch with relatively fewer numbers of Chinese and Punjabi speakers than the Metro Vancouver average. The $105,404 average household income compares to $64,889 for the City of Vancouver and $68,853 for Metro Vancouver. The $950,000+ average house sale price is significantly higher than the Vancouver average generally. There is no nonmarket housing within or near Point Grey.

Business Opportunities and Transportation Resources

Point Grey 1The main commercial area of shops and services is in the Point Grey Village Business Improvement Association area between Tolmie and Discovery streets along West 10th Avenue. The association says commercial businesses catering to affluent professionals will find a profitable market in the Point Grey Village area, where zoning accommodates all sorts of goods and services in a central neighbourhood location also close to the growing University of British Columbia (UBC) residential area, where there is significant opportunity for businesses to take advantage of this expanding market segment.

No rail transit reaches Point Grey, but there is plenty of street parking to make the Point Grey Village merchants easily accessible by vehicle. Frequent bus service along Routes ##7, 9, and 17 and night service routes between Downtown and Dunbar and UBC operate along 10th Avenue and Alma Street. The 99-B Route is a convenient service to Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver Community College, and the SkyTrain Expo and Millennium lines.

Point Grey Fiesta

The annual Point Grey Fiesta began in 1986, Vancouver’s centennial year, which coincided with the Expo ’86 world’s fair, when a small group of Point Grey organizers formed the Point Grey Fiesta Committee. The festivities formally start the summer with a Saturday morning parade on West 10th Avenue and continue the weekend celebration with stage performances and exhibitions in Trimble Park, where carnival rides, contests, and games continue from Friday to Sunday. The volunteer members of the Point Grey Fiesta Committee plan and oversee the activities and attractions with care as a financially self-sustaining but nonprofit annual neighbourhood community event that brings together Point Grey Fiestasocial and business groups with visitors and day-trippers for a day of community fun and frolic. The fiesta is a village celebration with a small-town parade, amateur stage performances, and a carnival.
